HTC One Mini Announced: Smaller But Still Smarter

A few months ago Samsung introduced the Galaxy S4 Mini. And now HTC has unveiled the HTC One mini. here’s a fun fact: Since they each have 4.3 inch screens, they’re bigger than the iPhone 5. I guess “mini” is a relative term.

As you might expect from the name, the HTC One mini looks an awful lot like the 4.7 inch HTC One. It has the same metal case, front-facing speakers, and HTC Sense software with BlinkFeed on the home screen.

But the new phone isn’t just designed to be smaller than its older sibling. It’ll also most likely be cheaper, and it has the slightly less impressive specs to prove it.

The HTC One mini has a 4.3 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel screen (instead of a 4.7 inch,1920 x 1080 pixel display), a 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 dual-core CPU (instead of a 1.7 GHz Snapdragon 600 quad-core chip), and 1GB of RAM (instead of 2GB). HTC also left out NFC from this model.

While the lower screen resolution might disappoint some, keep in mind that the HTC One mini has the same resolution as last year’s HTC One X — but on a smaller screen, which means that the display should look at least a bit sharper than one of the best phones on the market in 2012.

HTC’s smaller phone also has an 1800mAh battery rather than the 2300mAh battery found in the HTC One. HTC says the phone gets up to 21 hours of talk time on GSM networks, compared with 27 hours for the HTC One. But the smaller model has longer standby time, at 500 hours for GSM and 692 hours for WCDMA, compared with 479 hours and 500 hours, respectively for the HTC One.

The HTC One mini has the same UltraPixel camera found in HTC’s flagship phone. That’s a 4MP camera designed to capture more light than a typical smartphone camera, allowing for better photos in low-light environments.

The phone runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with HTC Sense 5.0 and features some HTC features including support for HTC Zoe photos. other specs include a 1.6MP front-facing camera, 16GB of storage, 802.11n WiFi, HSPA+ and LTE connectivity.

HTC plans to launch the One mini in some markets in August, with a global launch coming in September.
