Xiaomi MiBox, an Apple TV Knock off that might not be affordable one as expected
Recently Xiaomi has launched the Xiaomi Mibox, an more affordable Apple TV knock off, but is that really practical ? lets take a look.
According to Reuters, the Xiaomi Box is reportedly suffering from government investigation, which might led to the launch delayed. Rumor circulated that Xiaomi Box did not have the license to provide contents over its set top box. there were a lot of underground set-top box makers offering illegal contents that go unnoticed in China. The launch of Xiaomi Box is well publicized, that’s what trigger the government to take action. Lei Jun, the founder of Xiaomi, said the product would meet all the government rules when sales start next month.
In order to launch its set top box legally, Xiaomi would have to remove all the unauthorized television content providers including Sohu, Tencent QQ, PPTV, Netease, iFeng, etc. Meanwhile, the company will have to get contents ONLY from the seven licensed internet-television content providers in the country including China National Television (CNTV), Bestv, Southern Media (SMC), Wasu, China International Broadcasting Network (CIBN), Hunan Broadcast and China National Broadcasting Network (CNBN). In other words, it’s impossible for Xiaomi to launch the set top box with many unauthorized content providers, just like other underground set top boxes in China. Of course, Xiaomi could still launch their set top box on time, but it will provide very limited contents. At the moment, Xiaomi only has one licensed content provider in their set top box and that’s Wasu.
But the real headache for Xiaomi is not seeking more partnerships with other licensed content providers or preparing a budget for the massive license fees. The real problem is all the contents from licensed providers are very boring due to the country’s tight control on television programmes and internet contents. It’s obviously pointless for their consumers to buy a set top box that doesn’t provide interesting contents.
